Chandraprabha Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the lesser known reserved in the country, yet it possesses a rich flora & fauna. Located at a distance of 70 Kilometers Southeast of Varanasi, it sprawls over 78 sq. km of land in the Chandauli district. One of the things about the reserves popularity is it serving as an ideal excursion or as a means of breaking the monotony which one get accustomed to while visiting the historical city of Varanasi. The Naugarh and Vijaigarh hillocks in the Vindhya forest range in Chandauli nestles the reserves.

Dense forests, sublime streams and naturally endowed beauty makes it a beautiful picnic spot. Two scenic waterfalls namely, Devdari and Rajdari on the river Chandraprabha have emerged as its star attractions. Efforts were made to ensure a healthy population of Asiatic Lions during the past. Established in 1957, three lions were relocated from other sanctuaries to Chandra prabha and the initial results were encouraging as the number increased from 3 to 11 by 1969. However, during the years that followed the lions were found missing and since then all revival plans have met with failure.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit Varanasi is regarded from the months of October to February when the weather conditions are at their best.

Flora & Fauna

The flora comprises of dry deciduous forest, composed of gneiss and laminated stone. The wide variety of animals found within the reserve includes blackbucks, chital, sambhar, nilgai, wild boar, porcupine and Indian gazelle. Chinkara and Panther are now the star attraction in the reserve. The reptile species includes gharial, python etc. The bird species includes over 150 varieties of both resident and migratory birds.

How to Reach (Chandraprabha)

Located a few hours’ drive away from Varanasi, Chandraprabha is easily reachable via road. The drive by a hired taxi takes approximately 2 hrs. Varanasi railway junction is the nearest one, well connected to most cities and states in India.
